Introduction to the music… and this guy
To those who don’t know me, this top 100 albums wont be like any other you’ve seen. To those who do know me, a lot of the albums may come as a surprise. But if anyone is expecting a list like those featured on popular radio stations or tv shows, then you will be disappointed,
I am no-one special in the eyes of humans, so why should I take this on and publicise it? Well, I am passionate about music, passionate about the bands I've discovered and love to introduce people to these bands. At the ripe old age of 35, I realise that the list isn't even a full compilation of what i will discover, both old, recent and future, but with 30 years of that time, being in and around music, and having listened to the greats of different genres alongside those left behind, I feel my palette is currently wonderfully coloured. I also don't get to share with many people my musical tastes, and finding it awkward to spark up a conversation, this is a format that settles one’s heart.
To paint a picture of what could feature, i grew up listening to a lot of ska, punk rock, and brit-pop. Further on i branched off to heavy metal, melodic rock, emo, reggae, folk and swing. As a Christian, I've discovered a whole pool of bands who most would not have heard of, and been pleasantly filled with, not just wholesome lyrical content, but some amazing songs that are musical honey to my ears. But lyrics aren't the pinnacle of this equation and neither my faith, so to speak. Its what my ears hear, and how these songs make me feel. Music is a powerful thing.
It has been a mammoth task - to recollect all the albums of past and present, and decide which ones to feature, let alone create an honest order from excellent to almost perfection. But if it gives me a chance to create a neat looking spreadsheet to guide my thinking, then I’m game! I would love to see any readers do the same, with possibly the same approach
There are some incredible songs in the world of music that don't feature. And thats because I’ve decided to look at albums as a whole - Judging every single full song. My process started with my love for listening to music - a decade of play-listing songs in a giant jukebox of a spotify playlist. Then, it was mathematical - viewing each song and associated album in terms of numbers. Next, re-listening to everything, making sure the numbers added up. Finally the heart - how does this music make me feel, and would i choose any particular album over another when it comes to slipping on a vinyl or CD.
Ive attempted to steer clear from nostalgia. There may be songs or albums from bands featured that the world may see as their best. There are songs I remember from band rehearsals or particular moments of life. But the only bias I've used is my own preference. After all, we all love different music and move to the beat of different tunes. That is why the human race is so wonderful.
Some ground rules. I decided to give myself some boundaries:
1. Only studio albums - no greatest hits or compilations
2. Only one album per artist - other notable albums will get a mention
3. Permissible to ignore small fills/instrumentals & intro/outros if listed as a track.
4. Although tempting, Album cover doesn't come into the rating, but will be commented on.
Feel free to comment, to follow and to get into conversation with me. At this point, i don't know how the full list looks. But i’m definitely ready to get started.
