No.52 - ‘Tourist History’, by Two Door Cinema Club (2010)
“In a few weeks, I will get time to realise it's right before my eyes; And I can take it if it's what I want to do; And I am leaving and this is starting to feel like it’s right before my eyes; And I can taste it; it’s my sweet beginning…”
There are bands that always make me smile when I hear their songs. Every Two Door single I heard on the radio was a joy. In 2016, I heard the excellent disco, Bee Gee-esque ‘Bad Decisions’ for the first time and Gameshow was the first Two Door album that I owned. Although it was a far removal from the likes of the other singles, it didn’t sway me from listening further. Glad I did, because Tourist History has found it’s well deserved place at no.52.
Very upbeat with a recognisable sound that sets them apart from other indie bands; The sweet high registered vocals of Trimble, the wonderful squealing guitars of Halliday, and brilliantly held up by the wandering bass of Baird. Backed by a hectic drum beat with obvious disco influence and rim shots a plenty. It all comes together to bring much joy and excitement to the listening ears.
The songs themselves are generally fast paced. Even the medium tempo’d songs still convey the classic Two Door elements described above. They are incredibly catchy and the vocal melodies are excellent. The feel good sensation from these songs always remains, and I never bore of their good vibes and excellent quality. Indie pop, rock, disco-rock fans, or anyone who just wants a pick-me-up; give this album a good listen. You wont be disappointed.
Two Door Cinema Club formed in 2007, Northern Ireland. Their original name was ‘Life Without Rory’ and placed last in a Rockschool competition. The new name was chosen after Halliday’s mispronunciation of the local cinema, The Tudor Cinema. Tourist History reached no.24 in the UK and no.16 in Ireland, whilst charting in many other countries all over the world. It has been released on vinyl and I own the limited edition white vinyl.
